Mountaineering Gear Store
The Mountaineering gear store includes most of the basic gear necessary for alpine and ice climbing.
Accessing the Mountaineering Store
Mountaineering gear is available by appointment only, and should be checked out well in advance of the summer season. Contact the Mountaineering Convenor to set up a time, usually during the Tuesday night meeting. The alpine climbers are usually gone over the summer climbing, so please plan ahead.
Policies
In addition to the club's general policy on gear hire, the following policies apply to the mountaineering gear store:
- It is the sole responsibility of the hirer to check that the equipment hired is suitable for the intended activity, including the condition and state of repair of the equipment.
- Gear hire is due at the time of hire.
- The hirer must ensure all gear is returned promptly. The convenor will set a return date at the time of hire.
- The hirer is liable to compensate the club for any missing or lost equipment (50% of the replacement cost).
- Mountaineering gear rusts easily. All metal tools should be free of rust and lubricated with a food grade lubricant (i.e. Vaseline or cooking oil) prior to being returned.
Hire Rates
Gear hire will be set by the convenor at the time of hire based on the combination of gear hired and the length of hire. Gear hire generally will not exceed $100 for a season. Please email the convenor if you would like more information.

Dry Ropes
The mountaineering gear store maintains a variety of dry-treated ropes suitable for mountaineering. These are generally lighter than rock climbing ropes, and will repel water.

There is a range of ice axes from technical tools suitable for steep water ice, alpine climbing tools, and walking axes suitable for more advanced/winter bushwalking in New Zealand. A matched set of hammers is also available.
Crampons
The club has basic 10 and 12 point steel crampons with step in bindings or full straps. Some pairs have anti-bot plates, and a few pairs with front points suitable for vertical ice are available.
Ice Screws
Turbo, express, and some other screws in various lengths.
Miscellaneous

Not only does the club maintain a set of alpine guidebooks, but we also receive copies of the New Zealand Alpine Club Journal, which has a considerable wealth of information on destinations in New Zealand and around the world.
