Skiing Gear Store

The ski store provides functional cross country skiing equipment for a fraction the cost of commercial hire. Snow shoes, shovels, and other winter toys are also available.

Accessing the Skiing Store

The skiing gear store is usually open during the trip meeting section of the regular club meeting, 7:15 pm – 8:00 pm Tuesday's during ski season. If you are unable to make this time, you may be able to arrange another time by contacting ski -at- mumc [dot] org [dot] au.

Policies

In addition to the club's general policy on gear hire, the following policies apply to the skiing gear store:

  • It is the sole responsibility of the hirer to check that the equipment hired is suitable for the intended activity, including the condition and state of repair of the equipment.
  • Gear hire is due at the time of hire.
  • The hirer must ensure all gear is returned promptly, usually on the Tuesday following the trip.
  • The hirer is liable to compensate the club for any missing or lost equipment (50% of the replacement cost).
  • Any damaged gear must be reported to convenor, placed in box beneath bench in ski store (clean and dry) and entered into “Damaged” book.
  • Leather boots require regular maintenance. It is the hirer's responsibility to: (a) prior to use: sno-seal boots if needed (ask convenor) (b) after use: return in clean condition (no dirt!). Loosen laces and lightly stuff with newspaper if still damp.

Gear available

Skis

We have primarily metal edged, pattern based touring skis ranging from 160cm – 200cm. These are appropriate for touring and telemark skiing. We have a limited number of waxless skis more appropriate for skating. Bindings include 3-pin (optional cables) and cable bindings. Short skis are better for lighter/shorter/less experienced skiers, long skis are better for heavier/taller/more advanced skiers. Sizing charts for fitting skis and poles are available in the ski store.

Boots

Both leather and plastic boots are available in a range of sizes. Plastics work better with cable bindings, and give better control and stability. Correct fitting is very important. Boots must be tried on with thick socks to be worn on the trip, and notices and charts are available in the ski store to help you. Check with the convenor if you are unsure.
