Update (01/08/23): Trip has been updated from intermediate to advanced due to extreme weather conditions. If you don't have previous experience hiking in the snow or are not very fit, this trip is not for you.
Warkwoolowler, the mountain where Aboriginal people collected the Bogong Moths is Victoria's highest peak and I still haven't climbed it, so here I am. It'll be snowy at this time of year, so we'll need snowshoes to avoid sinking.
This trip is listed as advanced. The terrain is very steep and the snow will amplify the difficulty so you'll still need to be fit.
We will also be camping in the snow and the area is well known for harsh wind conditions. Gear selection will be important and previous experience snow camping is a necessity.
Here's the plan:
Saturday 5th August (12km, 1,458m elevation)
- Leave the clubrooms at 6am
- Arrive at Mountain Creek Campground at 10:30am (ish)
- Hike to the start of the trail (2km)
- Hike to the summit via Staircase Spur, stopping for afternoon tea halfway at Bivouac Hut (6km).
- Hike to Cleve Cole Hut and set up camp (4km)
Sunday 6th August (14km, 257m elevation)
- Wake up at 7am, leave the campsite at 8:30am
- Hike back to the summit (4km)
- Walk down Eskdale Spur (8km)
- Walk back to Mountain Creek Campground (2km)
