Melbourne Climbing School runs an Essential Self-Rescue Skills course which is intended for climbers who are experienced in leading trad routes. This course will teach you the following skills:
Tying off a belay device
Escaping the belay to attend to an emergency situation
Z-drags and assisted hoists
Additional prusik knots and their uses
Prusiking up, and prusiking past a knot
Abseiling down, and abseiling past a knot
Retrievable single rope abseil
Lowering a partner past a knot (i.e. lowering a partner more than the rope length)
Various ways to belay if you don’t have a belay device.
After taking this course participants will be able to become MCI in the clubs framework. The cost of this course $460, but the club will subsidise members who take this course through Training Fund up to 50% of the cost.
Another option is for people wishing to become an MCI is to take the single pitch guiding course through ACIA, if people are more interested in this we may be able to get a course run before September (the next scheduled course date).
