This trip is listed as a beginner trip, due to limited elevation gain, clear tracks, shorter walks each day and nice campsites. Mt Feathertop is an extreme alpine enviroment, and should be treated as one. Large storms, high winds, and snow are possible at any time of the year. Participants should be aware of this, and if they are unsure of their ability to partake in this trip, should ask either me, a bushwalking officer, or a bushwalking deputy, who can further advise.
Welcome to the art of peak bagging. Over the course of this year, I aim to run several trips to conquer the highest peaks Victoria has to offer, with the first being an MUMC classic, Mt Feathertop.
Feathertop sits as the second highest mountain in the state, and has been given the nickname "the australian alp", owing to its uniqe summit slope and steep sides. We will be conquering this mountain via the Razorback, parking at Diamantina Hut, before hiking over to Federation Hut where we will spent the night. An early morning will see us summit feathertop, before heading back to the cars and home!
If we wish and have made good time on either day, we can also choose to take a 1.5km detour to summit Mt Hotham, or a 4km detour (2 per day) to sleep at MUMC hut. Both of these will be decided by me based on timing, group fitness, group happiness and weather, and are not certain to be present.
Priority on this trip will first and foremost go to whoever has a car. After that, I will be prioritising people who are new to the club and newish to overnight hiking. Those who are complete beginners to overnight hiking are encouraged to join, but should have a decent level of experience in single day bushwalking. Other leaders are also encouraged to join so that participant numbers can be increased.
Day 1: 10km, 290m of elevation gain - Diamantina Hut to Federation Hut
Day 2: 13km, 400m of elevation gain - Federation Hut to Feathertop summit to Diamantina Hut
