Trip update:
Signups are now open - at the moment there are plenty of cars. Assuming all drivers come along, everyone can be accommodated.
Rothwell has confirmed we can camp on-site.
Gear Required:
- Comfy reliable shoes
- Work clothes - long pants, long sleeves, hat
- Spare clothes
- Water container
- Gardening gloves
- Sleeping kit - tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat
- Food and stove - 1 x breakfast, 1 x lunch, 1 x dinner. Limited kitchen amenities are available so aim to be self-sufficient.
- Rain jacket
- Toiletries and medication
- Camp chair
- Torch
- Potentially a game for the afternoon
Expected petrol cost is $15-20
We will also be donating $25/person to cover costs of the night tour (discounted from the usual $50).
See you all at the meeting on Tuesday!
Do you like native animals and getting dirty? If so, this is the trip for you.
Nestled below the You Yangs, Mt Rothwell is one of several sanctuaries run by the Odonata network dedicated to saving threatened native species. Among others, it’s home to quolls, dingos, emus, curlews, rock wallabies and eastern barred bandicoots — a species the sanctuary helped delist from extinct to endangered in 2021.
Rothwell always has work to be done, so on April 11th we’ll head out from club rooms around 8am, arriving at 9am for a day helping with whatever’s needed. This could include weed spraying, native seed collecting, fencing, and other conservation jobs.
Afterwards we’ll have dinner before heading out on a night tour to see what we can spot. Camping on-site will be possible, which isn’t something the public normally gets to do.
Notes:
- Times may change slightly
- Spots will be limited by car availability
- A small donation may be needed for the night tour (TBC)
