Northern Prom Overnight

Looking for a little bit of experience in navigation and bush-bashing? We'll be doing a overnight trip of the Northern Circuit in Wilsons Prom, giving those interested a taste of tougher, less defined track and avoiding the infamous wade through the swamp. We will be making our way to Johnny Souey Cove, a sheltered beach on the northeastern side of the Prom and returning back out the same way. 

Previous overnight hiking experience is required, but most of the track is easy dirt road, with only a small 3km section of poorly defined and overgrown track requiring some skills in navigation, however we will remain together through this section to prevent anyone getting lost. The shrubs can be incredibly dense and may be spiky, participants should bring long sleeves and long pants to cover any exposed skin. Gaiters and proper footwear are very essential as the poorly defined track can disappear, leaving you in dense bush until finding the track again. Participants will need a good raincoat, even light rain can mean being soaked through when in thick bush. It is a coastal walk, temperatures will be above 0 overnight, but bring spare warm clothes in case of wet weather. 

Itinerary:

Saturday 19th September - 21.5 kms, 600 m elevation

Meet at clubrooms at 6:30am, drive down to Five Mile Carpark in Wilsons Prom and begin walking along a flat dirt road by 10am. Continuing on the fairly flat wide road for 18.4 kms until we reach Five Mile beach and walk to its northern end, where we will have the river crossing. The river can be impossible to cross if the tide is too high, so timing will be important to make sure we arrive there no later than 3pm to cross. Past the river, the track becomes fairly steep at first and much harder to follow. Bush-bashing and navigation will be required from this point, for the next 3kms until Johnny Souey Cove. 

Sunday 20th September - 21.5 kms 

Returning the same way we came, we will return to Five Mile beach and return back on the road all the way back to the carpark. Most of the elevation will be completed in the first 3 kms during the bush-bashing. We will aim to be back at the car by 5pm, and arrive back at the clubrooms late on Sunday night
