Introducing the MUMC Rogaine Leaderboard!

Rogaining is a one of the club's most popular sports, with over 70 members having participated in official events over 2026. With so many people engaging in the sport, the question naturally arises, 'Who is the best?'. While the point is to have fun, not to win, where's the harm in some competitive spirit?

Our current leaders are:

  • Open: Roland Cameron (268.92 Points*)
  • U23: Roland Cameron (268.92 Points*)

*Our scoring approach is an in-house formula that aims to reward both high-scoring and high-participation. See the methodology section below for further information.

Methodology

Formula: (Points Scored in Event / Points Scored by Winner of Event)^2 * 100

Why this formula?

We want to reward both participation and overall wins for rogaines. While a simple sum could achieve this it doesn't accurately reflect two key concepts:

  1. Rogaines aren't usually comparable. Scoring 3,000 points at a metrogaine is very different to scoring 3,000 points at the 24hr Vic Championships. Therefore we needed to normalise the scoring. This is achieved by dividing a person's score by the maximum score achieved on the course for that event.
  2. We took a normative view that someone who wins 1 event is a 'better' rogainer than someone who scores 50% of the possible points at 2 events. Thus, the normalised scores could not simply be added together but rather needed to be adjusted to offer more points for scoring higher. We landed on an exponential to achieve this. Therefore, points are awarded based on the following:
% of Event Points            50%      60%      70%      80%     90%      100%

Overall, we believe this methodology strikes the right balance to reward participation and achievement. We are open to comments and suggestions and if you believe that you have been scored incorrectly, please reach out to and .
