UPDATE
This trip has been rescheduled. New dates: March 14&15.
What is tiny, cute, furry, endangered and lives in a box up a tree?
Come and find out!
The Regent Honeyeater Project has been operating a nestbox program for over a decade, providing arboreal homes for threatened species such Sugar Gliders and Squirrel Gliders. Located in the forests of the Lurg Hills, all the boxes need to be checked each year - to monitor the populations and to learn more about their habitat needs.
The first nestbox monitoring weekend of the season will take place on March 1 & 2.
We will drive up to Benalla on Saturday morning (the other option is to take the train on Friday afternoon if car space is insufficient), returning late in the afternoon on Sunday. There is free accommodation in the Benalla Scout Hall (mattreses provided, bring everything else), or you can camp.
You will need:
- food & drinks for the weekend (we'll be out in the field during the day, on Saturday there is a group BBQ dinner)
- sleeping bag and/or tent
- sturdy shoes, long trousers (gaiters are a good idea), sun protection, rain gear (just in case)
- money for petrol & car maintenance (~$20-25 depending on numbers)
Trip meeting will be on February 25.
If you have questions in the meantime, find me at the clubrooms on a Tuesday night or email me at conservation at mumc dot org dot au.
Nextbox weekends will also be held on April 5 & 6 and May 3 & 4.
