Ever wondered how maps are made?

What's a grid reference? - What's a geodetic datum? - What's an elevation model? How are contours drawn?

I'm running an evening session where we'll take a look at the history of cartography and map-making, the theory that underpins modern-day geography, practicalities of modern paper/digital mapping and show how this could be relevant to MUMC members, whether it's cave surveying or rogaining.

All welcome. If you have any interesting or unusual maps/charts (e.g. aero/nautical/geological etc.), bring them along.

Summary:

  • Overview
  • History of Mapping
  • Types of Maps
  • Earth's Coordinate System
  • Datums
  • Surveying for Mapping
  • GPS and GIS
  • Projections
  • Map as a Summary of the World
  • Making Your Map

If there is sufficient interest, we can organise practical session(s) and look at what we can do with the many freely available GIS data sets available in ArcGIS/QGIS etc.

I'll be pitching this at the novice. Depending on interest/level of knowledge amongst attendees (current or desired), we can organise followup practical/theory sessions.
