Goongerah Environment Centre (GECO) is a conservation organisation based in the pristine far east gippsland forests. They do amazing work researching the plants, animals and ecosystems of the area to build a case to protect forests from logging operations in the area.

On long weekends they run Citizen Science camps, were the public is invited to participate in conservation activities that contribute to their work.

This might include doing carbon storage measurements, spotlighting to count endangered greater gliders (they are very cute) and ecological classing of rare ecosystems that are under threat.

I went to a camp last year and it was very memorable. There forests are very beautiful, and you'll learn a lot about how logging is threatening precious species like crayfish, gliders and rainforest ferns and trees.

Participants camp in a local campsite and chose which activities to get involved in each day. Food is available for $5/dinner. Otherwise the event is free of charge.

It's a long drive (7 hours) but worth it! There's usually options to carpool with other participants. I won't be attending this camp, but happy to help others to organise and answer any questions.
