Standard: Intermediate
Meeting: Tue, 1 May 2018, 7:30 pm

This will be a fun weekend of hiking and skills training for women and non-binary oxos who wish to become a leaders in the club. The weekend will be formatted as a hike in the Victorian high country, most likely up Mt Bogong and will include practical skill sessions and leadership scenarios. By the end we hope all participants will be comfortable leading beginner-level bushwalking trips and will be appropriately equipped to lead a 'supervised' club trip or two before formally becoming hiking leaders in the club.

Participants should meet the following requirements:

  • You're interested in becoming an MUMC leader and intend to stay in the club and lead trips (unfortunately not open to exchange students leaving this semester)
  • You are an intermediate level hiker and have experience on day and hopefully multi-day hiking.
  • You can commit to leading a 'supervised' hike within the next two months
  • You're a woman/non-binary/genderqueer etc (sorry guys, but you probably should have got that from the trip title...)

There will be 10 places for participants and we are currently looking for a further two or three leaders too. Please register your interest for the trip here on the website and send a short email application to (by Sunday 29th April) outlining your hiking experience, why you want to become a leader and how you plan to contribute to the club as a leader.

Sorry for the dry sounding write-up, I personally guarantee this will be fun and I'm sure we can all get a lot out of such a weekend. The idea to run this trip comes from the 2017 forum and a recent group discussion with feedback that many women in the club prefer a more structured pathway to leadership than normally occurs in MUMC, largely to consolidate skills and build confidence. If you have suggestions for the trip or are interested to know what is planned, just give me a bell.
