MUMC has long been involved with the Regent Honeyeater Project in central Victoria. This incredible project has been planting trees for native birds and wildlife for over 20 years in the countryside around Benalla. This vegetation provides food and a home to the critically endangered regent honeyeater songbird, and also gliders and small mammals.

There are plenty of planting weekends so check if any of the listed dates will work for you.

There are different roles with the planting. If you're up for a challenge you can prepare the soil with mattocks and spades. If you want something lighter you can switch to putting the plants in.

Note this trip is advertised by the club but it is run by an external organisation. Information about how to participate will be provided at the trip meeting.

The trip: Leave Friday night to stay in Benalla (accommodation in scout hall provided). Planting starts Saturday morning. The days planting is broken up into chunks, with plentiful breaks for picnic morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. During the breaks the team gives really interesting talks about the birds and animals we're helping to protect. The organisers will share their knowledge about the animals, the diversity of vegetation we're planting, the soils and all sorts of things!

On Saturday night there's a free buffet dinner provided, followed by optional 'barn dancing' and some hard earned sleep in the local scout hall. No need to bring tents, just pillows and sleeping bags (ear plugs recommended). Mattresses provided and showers optional at the local caravan park.

On Sunday morning we'll start planting again and finish up at 1 with a picnic lunch provided. It's usually lovely food, with barbecue, billy tea, salads and vego options.

Optional early return to melbourne Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Area: Outside of Benalla (200km from CBD)

Costs: Accommodation in scout hall provided, as well as Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch. Showers at nearby caravan park are $3.

Please contact to sign up for planting weekends and nest box inspection weekends.
