MUMC has long been involved with the Regent Honeyeater Project in central Victoria. This incredible project has been planting trees for native birds and wildlife for over 20 years in the countryside around Benalla. This vegetation provides food and a home to the critically endangered regent honeyeater songbird, and also gliders and small mammals.
There are plenty of planting weekends so check if any of the listed dates will work for you.
There are different roles with the planting. If you're up for a challenge you can prepare the soil with mattocks and spades. If you want something lighter you can switch to putting the plants in.
Note this trip is advertised by MUMC but it is run as an independent trip using an external organisation. Participants are responsible for their own health and safety during the trip. Information about how to participate will be provided at the trip meeting.
The trip: Leave Friday night to stay in Benalla (accommodation in scout hall provided). Planting starts Saturday morning. The days planting is broken up into chunks, with plentiful breaks for picnic morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. During the breaks the team gives really interesting talks about the birds and animals we're helping to protect. The organisers will share their knowledge about the animals, the diversity of vegetation we're planting, the soils and all sorts of things!
On Saturday night there's a free buffet dinner provided (BYO) followed by free time and some hard earned sleep in the local scout hall. This weekend also has some optional bushdancing lessons on Saturday night! No need to bring tents, just pillows and warm sleeping bags (ear plugs highly recommended). Mattresses provided.
On Sunday morning we'll start planting again and finish up at 1pm with a picnic lunch provided. It's usually lovely food, with barbecue, billy tea, salads and vego options. Benalla also has amazing street art so be sure to check this out before you leave!
Optional early return to Melbourne Saturday night or Sunday morning.
Area: Outside of Benalla (200km from CBD)
Costs: Accommodation in scout hall provided, as well as Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch.
Please contact or to sign up for planting weekends.
