Hello there Oxo's!

Last updated: February 17, 2021

We have an updated return to play plan for Melbourne University Sport! The maximum number of people allowed on trips will now be tied to the indoor household limit, this means we can have trips of 30 people! Tuesday meetings in the clubrooms are still suspended but gear hire is allowed. If you need to hire gear for a club trip, contact your trip leader or relevant sports officer.

Members are required to follow our COVID-19 participant guidelines when on trips and accessing the club rooms.

Stay safe,
MUMC

Hey friends!

Save the date for the first Rogaine of the year. We are SUPER KEEN to get more involved in Rogaining this year, so if its something you've been thinking about, or have never heard of before but sounds like your thing, now is the time to have a go!

This rogaine is in Mullungdung Forest - North of Woodside in South Gippsland, 2.5 hours driving time from the CBD. As the event is 6hr or 12 hr, there is the option to camp overnight on the Friday or Saturday night, depending on what works for people. We will help organise teams according to skill level/how far you want to go.

Never heard of Rogaining?

Rogaining is the sport of distance cross-country navigation in which teams of two to five members visit as many checkpoints as possible in the specified time (usually 6 or 12 hours). Its kind of a mix between trail running and orienteering.

A central base camp (called the "Hash House") provides hot meals throughout the event and teams may return at any time to eat, rest or sleep. Teams travel at their own pace- though its a competition, you can go as fast or as slow as you like, and there is no pressure to get to any or all of the checkpoints.

MUMC invented it- Rogaining developed as a sport in its own right in the early 1970's, but 24-hour walks had been held since at least 1947 by MUMC. The word ROGAINE was coined from: ROd, GAIl and NEil, the three people in Australia who developed the first ROGAINE.

Once you've started an event, the parts of the course you see are entirely up to you and your team members. Some teams may cover more than 60km in a 12 hour event or over 100km in an event of 24 hours duration. However, many others may walk only a few kilometres and achieve just as much satisfaction :)

Teams may return to the Hash House at any time during the event and as often as they like for food, rest, sleep, and conversation.

Entry is subsidised by the club, so entry usually only costs around $20, which includes food and drink from the Hash House.
