MUMC has long been involved with the Regent Honeyeater Project in central Victoria. This incredible project has been planting trees for native birds and wildlife for over 20 years in the countryside around Benalla. This vegetation provides food and a home to the critically endangered regent honeyeater songbird, and also gliders and small mammals.
Unlike previous events, sleeping arrangements will no longer be supplied. Events will be run as 'planting days' NOT 'planting weekends'. Anybody attending will need to book in by 10pm of the Sunday prior to the event (this will allow observation of the 7 day weather forecast). The booking link is provided above.
There is no charge as always. You also don’t need to bring along your ticket. Booking is required to adhere to COVID-19 regulations. There are plenty of planting days so check if any of the listed dates will work for you.
There are different roles with the planting. If you're up for a challenge you can prepare the soil with mattocks and spades. If you want something lighter you can switch to putting the plants in.
Note this trip is advertised by MUMC but it is run as an independent trip using an external organisation. Participants are responsible for their own health and safety during the trip. Information about how to participate will be provided by email to all those who sign up on the Friday a week before the event.
The trip: Leave Friday night to stay in Benalla (accommodation not provided). Planting starts Saturday morning at 9am and finishes at 4.30pm. The days planting is broken up into chunks, with plentiful breaks for picnic morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. During the breaks the team gives really interesting talks about the birds and animals we're helping to protect. The organisers will share their knowledge about the animals, the diversity of vegetation we're planting, the soils and all sorts of things!
On Saturday night there's a free evening meal provided at a registered dining venue in Benalla.
On Sunday morning planting commences again at 9am and finish up at 2.30pm with lunch supplied by a registered take away venue delivered to the planting site. Benalla also has amazing street art so be sure to check this out before you leave!
Option to stay both days or attend a single day only. Booking must be made for each day of attendance.
