The Strzeleckis – a little known but stunningly beautiful region of Victoria that’s been on my list for a while. If you like the idea of dense, misty forests dominated by tall Mountain Ash trees, this is one for you. Also a bunch of opportunities to spot birds, wombats, wallabies, and the occasional snake!

The plan is to do the Mt Tassie Loop as an overnight hike. We’ll drive up from the clubrooms on Friday morning with a stop on the way for lunch, and hike to the campsite Friday afternoon. On Saturday we’ll finish the loop back to the cars and drive back to the clubroom in the evening.

NOTE: Having just visited the area, I have upgraded the hike to an intermediate level of difficulty, as we'll need to walk a little further to get to a suitable campsite. Overnight hiking experience is prefereable, although if you are fit and can confidently hike up to 15km in a day, I could make an exception.  Additionally, you will have to be prepared for wet weather and potentially leeches – this means waterproof clothing, pants, and long sleeve tops.

Trip details: 1 night (25km, 1205m elevation):

Day 1: Mt Tassie car park to Pattison's rest area (~10km, 3-4 hours)

  • Most of the elevation gain will be on this day
  • Camp at Morningside rest area

Day 2: Pattison's rest area to Mt Tassie car park (~15km, 5-6 hours)

  • Optional 3km side hike to a suspension bridge and back

Expected trip cost: $40 (for petrol there and back)

See an approximate hike route here (although this doesn't include the hike to the campsite and back): https://www.trailhiking.com.au/hikes/mt-tassie-loop/

Keen to get deep into a forest :)
