For the summer alpine season 2011-2012 MUMC will be coordinating an alpine climbing course guided by alpine guide and MUMC life member Stuart Hollaway.

This is a scheduled 9 day alpine climbing course based in Westland National Park for MUMC members. Up to 4 places are available. The alpine component of the course will be supported by the MUMC pre-alpine skill weekend at Mt Arapiles, which participants should plan to attend (Mt Arapiles; October 22-23) . The fully inclusive (guides, food, accommodation, helicopter flights, park concessions & gst) cost of the 9 day alpine climbing course is $2000 per participant.

Participants will need to supply their personal clothing and equipment including a rope and climbing hardware. All necessary equipment, except for mountain boots, can be hired from MUMC. Boots are available for hire from some sources in NZ.

Focused on climbing in the high mountains, this course introduces and practices the skills of modern climbing along with decision making processes, terrain analysis, hazard evaluation and route selection in a heavily glaciated environment so that participants leave the course able to practise the skills and decision making necessary to become competent amateur mountaineers.

Register interest, secure your place or get more information from the mountaineering convenor: Dale Thistlethwaite ()

Deposit & payment dates: $500 by Aug 31; $500 by Nov 10; balance by January 4
