Lake Mountain to Keppel Hut + Keppel Falls

Lake Mountain to Keppel Hut

A beginner/intermediate hike out to Keppel Hut at Lake Mountain. Trail will be through the snowgums and along wide cross country ski trails. A relaxed introduction to alpine hiking and only a chill 2 hour drive from Melbourne. This will be a nice bite sized trip. 

I’ve heard reports the trails are somewhat overgrown, so recommending long pants or gaiters, aeroguard and an adventurous attitude. Will need a couple drivers

Plan

Saturday

- leave Melbourne around 10am Saturday 1 April

- drive up Lady Talbot drive to see some waterfalls and have lunch

- commence the hike in the early afternoon from the car park on Lake Mountain road

- Hike approx. 11km on undulating trails (some hills) to Keppel hut

- Arrive at camp, likely around 5pm 

- Camp the night next to the hut, hopefully we can catch some stars if the night is clear

Sunday

- Break camp at 9am

- Continue on another 13km to complete the loop back to the cars, stopping at views and snack points

- Finish the hike around midday

- Return to club rooms at approximately 2pm. Option to stop for a treat on the drive home.
