Warkwoolowler, the mountain where Aboriginal people collected the Bogong Moths is Victoria's highest peak, and I have climbed it, and I want to do it again, so here I am. It'll be snowy at this time of year, so we'll need snowshoes to avoid sinking.


This trip is listed as intermediate. Even though it is only an overnighter, the terrain is very steep and the snow will amplify the difficulty so you'll still need to be fit.


We will also be camping in the snow, and the area is well known for harsh wind conditions. Gear selection will be important, and previous experience snow camping is a necessity. 


Here's the plan:

Day 1 Saturday 5th August (14km, 1,458m elevation)

Leave the clubrooms at 6:30am

Arrive at Mountain Creek Campground at 11:30am (ish)

Hike to the summit via Esklade Spur, stopping at Michell Hut Campground 2/3 the way to the summit and set up camp.

Day 2 Sunday 6th August (12km, 257m elevation) 

Wake up at 7am, leave the campsite at 8:30am

If and only if the conditions are safe enough hike to the summit of Mount Bogong and descend via Staircase Spur 

If the conditions are no longer safe enough to summit walk down esklade spur and hike back towards Mountain Creek Campground 

Walk down Staircase Spur (6km)

Walk back to Mountain Creek Campground (2km)
