To attend this trip you need to have completed at least one overnight hike with the club before. The walk is not particularly difficult, there is not much elevation, but it is sandy and kinda long. 


Embark on a captivating journey through the heart of Australia's Little Desert, a land deeply connected to the Wotjobaluk people. As the sun sets on our first day, we'll find ourselves in the charming town of Dimboola, where the iconic Dimboola Pub awaits to offer a taste of authentic Australian hospitality. From scenic drives past Australia's ugliest big koala tourist attraction to immersive nature walks and tranquil camp nights, this adventure promises a blend of exhilaration and serenity, making it an unmissable experience for those seeking a unique escape from SWOT Vac.

Thursday 26th of October | Horseshoe Bend Campground:

Departing the MUMC at 10:00am we embark on a scenic 4-hour drive through the historic towns of Ballarat, Ararat, and Horsham. Take a brief pit stop at the Big Koala, perhaps Australia’s ugliest tourist attraction. Along the way, savor a delightful lunch in a quintessential Australian country town. We’ll set up camp at the serene Horseshoe Bend Campground before the sun goes down and then we’ll head to town to indulge in a hearty meal at the Dimboola Pub, relishing the last dinner that isn't cooked from dehydrated ingredients.

Friday 27th of October | Yellow Gums Walkers Camp - 21kms:

Rise and shine! After packing up our tents, we'll embark on a 21km walk to Yellow Gums Walkers Camp. The trail meanders along the Wimmera River, surrounded by majestic River Red Gums. As we tread the limestone path, we'll keep an eye out for malleefowl, and painted dragon lizards. Further along, Eagle Swamp awaits, a haven for kangaroos, emus, and other wildlife. After a day of exploration, we'll rest our feet at Yellow Gums Walkers Camp.

Saturday 28th of October | Mallee Walkers Camp - 13.5kms: 

Today's journey takes us from Yellow Gums Walkers Camp to Mallee Walkers Camp via Wallaby Track, covering 13.5km. The trail winds through the desert landscape, flanked by Common Fringe Myrtle and Broom bush. If we’ve timed it right (and I think we will) there will be a riot of orchids and other spring wildflowers along the track. The day concludes at Mallee Walkers Camp, where we'll set up camp for the night.

Sunday 29th of October | return to MUMC- 13kms: 

On our final day, we'll cover 13km from Mallee Walkers Camp back to Horseshoe Bend Campground. The trail is well-defined, with sandy terrains and varying vegetation, from scrubby bushes to tall eucalyptus and pine trees. As we approach the end, the tranquil Wimmera River welcomes us back to Horseshoe Bend Campground, marking the conclusion of our journey.

Facilities:

Each campsite is equipped with a pit toilet, fireplace, and limited non-potable water from a rainwater tank. I will contact the ranger prior to our trip to double check the water levels in the tanks.

Costs:

Please bring $20 for fuel to the trip meeting. There are no other costs.

What to bring:

Clothing:

  • 3-4 sets of quick-dry hiking clothes (includes base layers, mid-layers for insulation, and a waterproof shell layer): You'll need one set for each day of hiking, plus an extra set as a backup.
  • 1 set of warm clothes for the evenings: This can be worn multiple times, just ensure it will keep you warm during cool nights.
  • 3-4 pairs of comfortable hiking socks: Aim for a fresh pair each day.
  • 1 pair of sturdy hiking boots: These are essential for comfort on the sandy track. I suggest you take your boots for a quick test-walk at the beach. If they fill up with sand quickly, pick up gaiters from the MUMC for this trip.
  • 1 pair of lightweight, comfortable shoes or sandals for evenings at camp.
  • Waterproof rain jacket:  even though it is a desert, it still sometimes rains.
  • Winter accessories: It gets cold at night in the desert so bring beanie, gloves, and scarf for cold mornings and nights.
  • Headlamp or torch: Useful for moving around the campsite at night.

Camping Gear:

You can borrow this from the MUMC

  • Tent: To keep you sheltered during nights at the campground.
  • Sleeping bag: Rated for winter weather to keep you warm at night.
  • Sleeping pad: For added comfort when sleeping on the ground.

Food and Drink:

  • Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long hikes.
  • Water filter/Steripen/water purification tablets (we can share this)
  • Energy-rich trail snacks
  • 3 breakfasts 
  • 3 lunches (or 4 lunches if you don't want to eat out on the first day)
  • 2 dinners (or 3 dinners if you don't want to eat out on the first day)
  • Portable camping stove and fuel to prepare dinners on the trail.
  • Cookware and eating utensils: Light, compact, and easy to clean.

Miscellaneous:

  • Personal Hygiene items: Travel-sized toiletries, quick-dry towel, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, menstruation products etc.
  • Personal medications: Include band-aids, pain relief medication, and any personal medication, etc.
  • Cash and/or cards: For meals and potential miscellaneous expenses.

Entertainment (optional):

Portable games, a book, or a journal: For downtime in the evenings.
