Hello! Please come join us as we explore southern parts of Wilson’s Promontory National Park (Wilson’s Prom). We’ll be doing a few day trips whilst being based out of Halfway Hut.

Thursday 15th February

Drive from MUMC to Telegraph Saddle Carpark

3 hours 20 mins driving

We’ll meet at the clubrooms around midday (this might change depending on what time everyone can leave on Thursday). We’ll gather into a van and drive together to Tidal River, where we’ll check in before heading to Telegraph Saddle car park to begin our hike.

Hike from Telegraph Saddle Carpark to Halfway Hut

7.4km | 2.5 hours walking | 30m elevation gain

To begin our hike, we’ll walk along telegraph track, which is a service road. Starting with a descent, this is a straightforward walk on a solid gravel road passing beautiful big gum trees. We will be crossing Growlers Creek just before reaching camp (you’ll want gaiters or sandals). We’re likely to be walking in the dark for part of our journey, so please ensure you have a reliable head torch and some spare batteries. Halfway hut has drop toilets and untreated rainwater. Please bring water treatment tablets and toilet paper.

Friday 16th February

Halfway Hut to Little Waterloo Bay and back

14.2km | 6 hours walking | 173m elevation gain

The walk from Halfway Hut to Little Waterloo Bay will not disappoint. We’ll be walking on firm sand and gravel paths. This part of the walk will take us through scrub, heath, and marshland. There will be some beach walking as we get close to Little Waterloo Bay. We’ll absorb ourselves in some of the most beautiful parts of Wilson’s Prom’s coastline. We’ll also have the chance to swim at Little Waterloo Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Victoria.

Saturday 17th February

Halfway Hut to South Point (and back) via Roaring Meg

16.6km (return) | 5 hours walking | 215m elevation gain

South Point is the southernmost point of mainland Australia. The landscape in this area consists of rainforests and beaches. There is abundant flora and fauna. There are likely to be 4 small creek crossings. The walk from Roaring Meg to South Point is rocky with some steep inclines and steps. Parts of it are overgrown, so bring gaiters! We’ll have lunch at South Point before heading back to base camp at Halfway Hut.

Sunday 18th February

Halfway Hut to Tidal River via Oberon Bay

12.3km | 3.5 hours walking | 125m elevation gain

On our final day, we’ll walk back to Tidal River via Oberon Beach, a beautiful windswept beach on a rugged coastline exposed to strong Westerly winds. From there, we’ll head back to Tidal River, which will be a good plate to grab a bite to eat. We will then catch a bus from Tidal River back to Telegraph Saddle Car Park, then drive home.

Suggested packing list

Food and Dining

  • 3 Dinners, 3 Breakfasts, and 3 Lunches: Prepare meals that are lightweight and easy to cook. Consider dehydrated meals for dinner, instant oatmeal or muesli for breakfast, and non-cook items for lunch like wraps or sandwiches.
  • Snacks: High-energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, jerky – good for on-the-go nourishment. Consider storing your snacks in zip-lock bags, as these become great little bin bags.
  • Reusable Cutlery, Bowl/Plate, and Cup: For all your meals.
  • Cooking Gear: Portable stove such as a trangia or jet boil (you can borrow a stove from the MUMC clubrooms on Tuesday after the trip meeting).

Clothing and Weather Gear

  • Rain Gear: Waterproof jacket and pants; you can borrow these from MUMC. These are essential, regardless of the forecast.
  • Gaiters: To protect you from snake bites, help waterproof your shoes during creek crossings, and prevents scratches when we walk through dense scrub.
  • Comfortable Hiking Shoes: You don't need anything fancy, but make sure you have worn them before.
  • Warm Clothing: Layers are key. Include a fleece or down jacket for cool nights.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, mosquito repellent, long-sleeved shirt, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Bathers & lightweight microfibre towel: These are optional, but will be very useful if you want to swim at Little Waterloo Bay!

Camping Essentials

  • Tent: You can borrow this from the MUMC, perhaps sharing with someone to lighten your load?
  • Sleeping Bag: You can borrow this from the MUMC.
  • Head torch: For visibility at night. Please also bring spare batteries and/or a spare head torch.
  • Multi-day Hiking Pack: You can borrow this from MUMC.

Hydration and Health

  • Water bottle or bladder: There is rain water along the trail to refill, but it will need to be treated. (You can purchase water treatment tablets such as Aquatabs at chemist warehouse.)
  • Personal Medications: Any necessary prescriptions.
  • Period products: Menstral cup, pads, tampons, hand sanitiser, etc.
  • Tape/band-aids: it's a long walk, so be prepared to preemptively deal with blisters before they go yucky. If you don't like tape, you could try hiker's wool or moleskin.

Cost

  • The trip should be about $100 each, including transport costs (hire car) and campsite fees.
  • If enough people join who have cars and can drive others, then we can reduce the cost of the trip.

Note: This is an intermediate trip. Some bushwalking experience is expected. If you’re not sure whether the trip is for you, please email either myself () or Josh () to discuss whether we think you have enough bushwalking experience to come on the trip.
