Embark on an enchanting journey through the beautiful landscapes of the temperate rainforest of the Dandenong Ranges, walking from the quaint town of Belgrave to the serene retreat of Cockatoo. Our path takes us through the lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong peoples. As we explore lush trails alongside the historic Puffing Billy Railway track, we're stepping through areas rich in both natural beauty and cultural significance. This adventure is an opportunity to connect with the land and each other, creating lasting memories amidst the stunning backdrop of Australia's natural heritage.

Day 1: The Adventure Begins (13th of April) 18kms | 471m elevation gain

Morning Trek Alongside History

Our day starts early with a train ride to Belgrave station, ensuring we're on the trail in Belgrave by 9 am. Walking alongside the historic Puffing Billy Railway track, we'll be immersed in a world where the echoes of a bygone era resonate through the towering mountain ash trees and dense fern gullies. This path offers an immersive experience into the flora and fauna of the region, with potential sightings of lyrebirds, colourful rosellas, and even wallabies.

Lunch Amidst Nature

Pack your snacks and a hearty lunch, as we'll find ourselves enveloped by nature's embrace, far from the nearest town when hunger strikes. This will be a perfect time to share stories and enjoy the tranquility of our surroundings.

Cosy Evening Retreat and Local Cuisine

After reaching our destination, we'll settle into the Cockatoo Rainforest Escape, our home for the night. There is nowhere to camp in a tent up in the Dandenong Ranges, so this cozy AirBnB, surrounded by nature, offers a unique alternative to camping, with beds and floor space for sleeping. We'll then explore Cockatoo, dining in the township to savour the local cuisine and culminate our day with shared stories and laughter.

Day 2: Return and Reflection (14th of April) 18kms | 465m elevation gain

Morning at Emerald Lake

I looked at getting puffing billy tickets for the return trip (rather than walking) but they don't sell one-way tickets, so if people want to pay extra for tickets we could consider getting puffing billy one way from Emerald lake. That could be fun, but it will make an already kinda expensive trip even more costly. But it would offer a unique perspective of the landscapes we've traversed. Let's talk about it.

Lunch in Emerald

Our return trek will be punctuated with a leisurely lunch in Emerald, where we can refuel and continue to enjoy the local fare amidst the picturesque setting of the Dandenong Ranges.

Journey Home

Refreshed and filled with the satisfaction of our shared adventure, we'll catch the train from Belgrave back to Melbourne in the afternoon.

Packing Essentials and Considerations

Given the unique nature of our trek, packing can be light, with no need for tents. Essentials include snacks, packed lunch for the first day, raincoats, and warm clothing to accommodate the unpredictable weather of the rainforest. This approach allows us to move freely, enjoying the moment and the company of friends new and old.

Cost

This trip will cost $70, you will need to pay in advance to secure your place. If I don't get enough signups I can cancel the booking and will get a refund. I know this is a weird trip, but the walk is soooo pretty, I didn't want you to miss out just because they don't have tent camping up here.
