Dear all,

I would be keen to head to Baw Baw National Park and do some exploring before the snow season makes access and camping more difficult. I have never been to Mount Whitelaw and the Whitelaw Hut ruins, so I would be interested to check it out. Who is keen to join me? I would also be keen to return in winter one time to do a snow hike and camp, so we could consider this a bit of a reconnaissance mission.

Starting at Mount St Gwinear carpark, the walk via the summit of Mount St Gwinear to Mount Whitelaw winds through heathland and Snow Gum forest. The magnificent views, stretching across the valleys of the Thomson and Aberfeldy Rivers and into the Victorian Alps, are a perfect reward. From Mount St Gwinear we will follow the trail west until intersecting the Australian Alps Walking Track. Then we will follow the trail North West across the plateau until we reach Mount Whitelaw near the start of the Thomson River. For more info; https://www.trailhiking.com.au/hikes/mount-st-gwinear-to-mount-whitelaw/

It would be a relatively easy-going 12.5km each way, with a total of 878 meters ascent/descent. If we are feeling ambitious, we could also combine it with the Mount Baw Baw summit (1567m) on either Sat or Sun. Being late May, I expect it to be very cold at night and appropriate gear would be required. Perhaps a pub meal in Rawson or Erica on Sunday before heading back to Melbourne.

Have I awoken your Wanderlust?

Lindsay
