The Great Ocean Walk is one of the most iconic hikes in Victoria. Just over 100 kilometres, starting in the charming town of Apollo Bay and finishing at the 12 Apostles, it's a hike that typically takes 8 days to complete, but let's be honest here, I don't have the time for that, and neither do you. As such, we'll be aiming to smash out this amazing hike in four days.

While the Great Ocean Walk is a relatively easy hike elevation-wise, its high average daily length, constantly changing conditions, and the length of the trip make it an intermediate hike. Previous overnight bushwalking experience is highly recommended. All participants are expected to be adequately prepared for the constantly changing weather conditions. Also, priority will be given to those who have cars.

We will be taking a shuttle bus (approximately $45 per person) back from the trailhead, and campground fees will be an additional $ 30-45, so the total cost of the trip, excluding gas, will be roughly $ 60-70.

The Plan

Day 1: Apollo Bay → Blanket Bay (24 km)

Leave crooms at around 6 am, stopping at Lorne or Apollo Bay for breakfast

Trail passes through Elliot Ridge (first 10 km), then continues to Blanket Bay via coastal and forest terrain (~14 km).

Day 2: Blanket Bay → Aire River (20 km)

Includes Cape Otway lighthouse mid-way.

The terrain alternates between coastal cliffs, forests, and heathlands.

Aire River is a lush campground near the river mouth.

Day 3: Aire River -> Devil's Kitchen (31 km)

Biggest day, covering the most remote and dramatic terrain: Johanna Beach, Melanesia, Ryan's Den, and The Gables.

Some of the most challenging climbs and coastal views on the walk.

Day 4: Devil's Kitchen → Twelve Apostles (29 km)

Long, mostly flat day along coastal cliffs and forest.

Expect a smoother trail than Day 3, but still some soft sandy patches.

Final section past Princeton boardwalk to the Twelve Apostles viewing area.

Take the shuttle bus back to Apollo Bay and aim to return to Crooms late in the evening.

If you have any questions about the trip, please don't hesitate to reach out.
