*Number of participants is limited based on instructor availability and ability to transport kayaks*
**Trip is weather dependent**

This is the first of our internal kayaking training courses as outlined in the draft 'Little book of paddling'.

The plan for the day is to collect gear and drive to Lysterfield Park Lake in the morning, spend the morning practising some skills (probably focused on the instruction of basic skills) before having a break for lunch. After lunch we will continue training (probably focusing more on the rescue/recovery skills) before returning in the evening. The cost for the trip will probably be around $40-50

The intent of this course is to train attendees to be able to organise and assist leading on flatwater kayaking trips, and to teach basic kayaking skills as part of an intro to kayaking trip.

However, after completing this course you will then need to organise/lead on several trips in order to show that you can properly implement the skills you have learnt, have gained sufficient experience and shown appropriate decision making and group and risk management skills across a range of conditions in order to be checked off to be a Trip Leader, and this be able to start running and leading your own trips.

To attend this course you will need to have some previous paddling experience, ideally at least 3 trips. The number of participants is limited depending on how many leaders we have to instruct. Preference will be given to participants who have been on more club trips and have more experience.

We will cover a number of topics including but not limited to:

  • instructing basic skills such as capsize drills, paddle strokes, hip flicks and T-rescues
  • some additional paddle strokes and refinements in paddling techniques
  • basic rescue/recovery techniques.

In order to attend, you will need to have already attended the kayaking leadership theory session/s, or have equivalent knowledge, which includes but is not limited to

  • paddling equipment (types and correct usage)
  • group management
  • teaching capsize drills
  • teaching basic paddle strokes
  • simple rescue/recovery techniques

Gear list (can be hired from MUMC):

  • Rescue PFD
  • Helmet appropriate for whitewater
  • Cag
  • kayak, paddle and deck

Personal gear (you MUST supply this or you cannot participante in the trip):

  • Wetsuit/thermals if you feel the cold (Absolutely no cotton) - limited number available from MUMC
  • Wetsuit boots or old shoes to wear in the water  (closed-toed and full coverage)
  • Dry change of clothes and towel for the end of the day, and a dry pair of shoes in case you use an old pair on the water.
  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks (individually wrapped chocolate/snack bars are great!)

If you have any queries then please get in touch.
Cheers
Michael
