Join an intro to canyoning training session run alongside ROC (RMIT Outdoors Club). Learn skills specific to the sport of canyoning in a dry and wet environment. Find out if you'd like to join a future canyoning trip and have some skills to bring with you.

Location: Britannia Creek nr Warburton, Yarra Valley, Approx. 1hr 40min from Melbourne.

Time: 10am meeting time. Finish time: Before 4pm.

Suitable for people who have never canyoned and would like to try canyoning skills before heading into a proper committing canyon. Some skills are similar to climbing but we will add in some wet conditions to demonstrate what canyoning is really like.

We will be practicing in a low flow waterfall so you will get a little wet. Wetsuits are advised as its starting to get a bit chilly out in the Valley. Wet suits can be hired from the Clubrooms on a Tuesday. If you cannot get a wetsuit, there are dry options on the day but be aware you may not get to practice some more advanced skills if you don't have suitable clothing that will keep you warm and dry.

What to expect: An overview of canyoning, introduction to canyoning gear and equipment, set up of harnesses and equipment, abseiling with canyoning descenders in dry and wet conditions. Communication in canyon

What to Bring:

Drinks, lunch and snacks

Wetsuit, raincoat, thermals, grippy shoes that can get wet (trail runners are ideal but runners will be ok too), please do not wear jeans or cotton clothing, ideally sports gear or general outdoors gear

Change of clothes, shoes & towel

What will be provided: Ropes, Harnesses, Abseiling gear

What you'll need to hire from the club: Climbing or caving helmet, Wetsuit

Cost: Gear hire and fuel TBC

Extra information

Max of 6 participants from each club.

Britannia Creek is located on a forestry road and is accessible to most vehicles, vehicles with some ground clearance is advised, I got there just fine in my astra a few days ago. There is limited parking so please carpool if possible. I live in the Yarra Valley so will meet participants out  there  on the day. I will email an exact location prior to the trip.

There are no toilets at the 'training area' but there are public toilets a few Km away at Wesburn. Alternatively follow leave no trace principles. There are also no undercover areas so if the weather is a bit wet we can put up some tarps.

Trip meeting will be via google meet as I don't live in the city, I'll send a link to the confirmed participants.

Please email me your experience to help plan a session that'll address most skill levels, even if you've never been on a rope before that's totally fine.

Please follow this link and watch the videos for some foundational knowledge
