Who wants to get their AST1 + some ice and navigation skills at the same time?
We’ll be joining Blizzard Academy’s AST1/ Ice+Nav course at Mt Hotham.
Skills needed: You should be able to ski difficult terrain confidently, have some overnight hiking experience, have a high level of fitness and any days in the backcountry already are a bonus.
Logistics: The course runs Friday/Saturday, so we’ll carpool up to Hotham Thursday afternoon and camp at JB plain Thursday/Friday night. We’ll need to drive into the resort for the 2 days so please factor in costs for fuel and resort car parking.
The course is currently $530 pp, however we will receive a 15% discount for a group of 6. You can receive some of this back on our Training Grant as well if you apply.
I’m keen to lock this in ASAP, so please only sign up if you’re committed to paying for this course in the next week or two.
Course description via Blizzard academy:
This extended course combines the standard Avalanche Canada AST 1 curriculum with an additional day dedicated to introductory ski mountaineering and alpine navigation skills.
The AST 1 + ICE/NAV course includes up to 6 hours of online learning and two days of practical field training.
Day one covers the standard AST 1 curriculum, focusing on avalanche awareness, terrain assessment, and companion rescue skills. Day two is split between introductory ski mountaineering skills and navigation techniques, helping participants build the confidence, knowledge, and decision-making skills needed to travel safely in Australia's alpine environment.
