Otways Freezefest: Sabine or Carisbrook Canyoning

Unless another leader will come on the trip, and also run the trip meeting to sort out gear hire, this will be a trip for fully independent canyoners only.

Join us for a winter canyoning trip in the Otway Ranges following in the footsteps of the NSW/Utah Freezefests. Depending on water levels and recent rainfall, we will head to either Sabine Falls (higher elevation, but less windy and less swimming) or Carisbrook Creek Canyon (more slides/swims/jumps).

Trip Details:
  • Pre-trip Meeting: Tuesday, 07/07/2026 at 7:00 PM via Zoom. We will finalize our location based on the weather forecast and arrange carpooling.
  • Skill Level: Intermediate. You must be checked off on abseiling and comfortable navigating steep, wet, and off-track terrain.
  • Gear Requirements: This trip is for independent participants who have their own canyoning gear sorted, unless another leader signs on to assist with face-to-face club gear hire (please get in touch if you can help!).
  • Transport: Robert and Lingshu will be driving from Bendigo, so I hope there is at least one other person with a car coming.

What to Expect:

Both canyons involve off-track walking, muddy approaches, and cold water. It is a great opportunity to get outdoors in winter and run some classic Otways routes, but you will need to be properly prepared for the July temperatures.

Essential Gear:

Staying warm is the main hazard expected during this trip. You will need to source:

  • Thick wetsuit (at least 5mm).
  • Neoprene booties/socks and gloves.
  • Standard canyoning PPE: Harness, helmet, descender, locking carabiners, and (cows tails).
  • Sturdy approach shoes or canyoning boots.
  • Thermals, a warm jacket, and a complete change of dry clothes for the drive home.
  • High-energy lunch, and a dry bag.

When you sign up, please detail your current abseiling experience, confirm you have your gear sorted, and let me know if you have a car and can drive.
