Requirements: Have done overnight hiking before, confident walking on uneven and steep terrain, and happy to walk with a big backpack!

Three peaks for a three day weekend!

This walk will be going to the Howitt-Wonnangatta Region of the Victorian Alps. We'll drive up on the Friday evening and camp locally, for an early start on Saturday.

The route -

Saturday - Upper Howqua Camping area to Mt Speculation 15 km/4.5 to 5.5 hrs.

Up Howqua River to Mt Buggery, then to Mt Speculation where we will camp for the night (Mt Speculation is "one of the finest campsites in the high country"!). From Mt Buggery the route follows the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Sunday - Mt Speculation to Hellfire Camp 10.5 km/3.5 to 4 hrs

Down Mt Speculation and across the Crosscut Saw, the jagged ridgeline joining Mt Buggery to Mt Howitt. To the Summit of Howitt, and then on to the Hellfire camping area, perched atop the bluffs over Howqua River South.

Monday - Hellfire Camp to Upper Howqua Camping area 10 km/

Climbing first past Hells Window we go up Mt Magdala, past Picture Point, then down Helicopter Spur. The spur requires some rock scrambling and is exposed - the book says "for hikers with a good sense of balance". There is an alternative route off Mt Howitt if we prefer.

Water is available close to both campsites. This photo I've found shows an aerial view of some of the peaks we will cross.

Trip meeting will be Tuesday 5th March. Until then you can email me at with any questions.
