Requirements: No specific experience required other than an appreciation for wild places. Expect some walking on uneven surfaces and rocks with all the time spent near and crossing the river. Expected fuel costs $50 per person.

Nestled out of sight in the Alpine National park is this bizarre lake from which no rivers appear to flow. Normally a 2 day trip the long weekend give us an extra half day for lazing about the lake or exploring the nearby peaks and waterfalls.

Leaving melbourne on Thursday night to camp close to the trackhead, the 15km walk on Friday to the lake will be at a relaxed pace. There are many crossings of the Wellington river on the way up the valley and the final push up to the lake is along the main track through the excitingly named Valley of Destruction. Sunday is all about a sleep in and enjoying the surroundings before returning half way to the cars via a different track optional side excursions to mining ruins or the waterfalls are possible for the energetic. Monday returns the remaining 9km to the cars for lunch and return home at a sensible hour.
This is one of the all time classic Victorian bushwalking destinations and the colours and textures of the creeks/rivers are completely surreal in parts.
