Requirements: It will be steep and cold, must have been hiking overnight before with a big pack, need to have a good level of fitness (otherwise we will be getting into camp at midnight)

I’d like to head up to the Alpine National Park for a 2 day walk, the weather’s getting cold but it is still a few weeks before the ski resorts open and snow comes, the landscape is incredible up here in the snow gums and I think this area is one of the most spectacular in the region, we will head up to the Crosscut, camp at Mac Springs and the next day head over Howitt and down to the car at Bindaree.

The plan is to leave Melbourne Friday night head to Mansfield, sleep here and get up early (6am!!), swap cars (my old van for my parents big 4WD troopy) and drive up past My Stirling to Bindaree in the Upper Howqua where the walk will start. From here we will walk up Stanley Name Spur, it’s a steep climb up to the Crosscut Saw, here we will be overlooking “The Terrible Hollow” and “Devil's Staircase” (got to love the names!), then a spectacular walk along the last bit of the crosscut to Macalister Springs where we will camp, there is a hut here and water source but we’ll need to take tents just to be safe, it is about 14km hiking, but very steep in some sections, it will take about 7-8hr.  The next day we will head over Mt Howitt and down Howitt spur and back to Bindaree, it is an easier walk compared to the day before (and mostly downhill), about 11-12km and 5hr.

Trip limit will be 8 as we will all head up in my van and then take the troopy. It is up in the snow area and there is a strong possibility that there might be a bit of snow, so you will need a good sleeping bag and lots of warm clothes.
