Hi OXO's,

The VCC is supporting the launch of Mike Law new book :

Michael (or mikl, to rhyme with motorsickle) is the Barry Manilow of rock, he was big in the 70s and never really worked out how to retire. He started in the Jurassic era of hemp ropes and waist belays, and saw gear, boots and ropes change rapidly in the first 5 years of climbing.

He climbed with many of the hot climbers of each decade, the Victorian big names from the 60s of Chris's Baxter and Dewhurst, and Mike Stone.

In the 70s he swanned around with Greg Child (Java), Chris Piesker (Aspro), Giles Bradbury, and started Kim Carrigan (Captain Triangle) climbing. There were many trips with The Gledhill Twins and Joe Friend.

The dole allowed him and many others to develop Arapiles and bad fashion in the 80s. Michael climbed with Mark Moorehead, Chris and Lincoln Shepherd, had a disastrous trip overseas, and scuttled back to Sydney where he Raced motorbikes for 6 years and got a job: 2 things that are guaranteed to ruin climbing.

In the 90s he did a few hard routes, but much more importantly he mass bolted The Freezer, The Railways cliffs, the Sydney seacliffs, and started work in the Grose Valley.

He was dragged kicking and screaming into this century by a desire to do some long classics, and hit the Grose Valley. With his wife Vanessa, he put up the best 30 routes in the Grose, He is now married and mortgaged and nappy wrangling in Sydney.

Law unto Himself is his climbing story.

To launch this tome, Mike Law himself will give a rambling presentation, show a few hundred slides, and will be available to sign books. Everyone will be encouraged to stay on afterwards for a beverage or two!

Location:
1000 £ Bend, 361 Lt. Lonsdale St, Melbourne. 7.30pm onwards.
