Requirements: Daypack with lunch, snacks, fruits and 2-3 litres of water. Sturdy walking shoes and light walking clothes (avoid jeans if possible). Also bring warm/wet weather gear in case of rain.

This is the first of five daywalks on the first Saturday of February, March, April, May and June. The pace is geared towards moderate fitness levels and will be fairly relaxed. Advanced, highly fit walkers may find the pace a bit leisurely but if that's what you are after please join us!

The daywalk is at Dandenong Ranges National Park, around 45-60 mins drive East of Melbourne. It will be in 2 parts, see below:-

1. "1000 Steps" Kokoda Track Memorial Walk
http://is.gd/RXeEmi

This is Melbourne's most popular short hike. It's a tourist destination and is quite busy but with good reason.

"March your way up the steep, 1000 step-climb of the Kokoda Walk and experience a tiny sense of the exhaustion felt by the Australian soldiers following the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea in World War II. Observe the plaques depicting the lives of those who fought and died on the trail during the Kokoda campaign in 1942. Along the way see tree ferns, and manna gum and blackwood towards the top of the hill."

* 1.0-1.5 hrs
* 5km return

* Medium Difficulty

2. Sherbrooke Forest Circuit
This walk is taken out of Lonely Planet's "Walking in Australia"
http://is.gd/HzQISt (photos only, not walk details)

"Good walking tracks through magnificent towering mountain ask forest and luxuriant fern gullies, the haunt of the elusive lyrebird"

* 3.5-4 hrs, 9km

* Circuit Walk

* Easy-Medium Difficulty

The plans are to leave Melbourne at 9:30am and arrive back at 7pm at the latest. Full details will be decided at the trip meeting.  Depending on what people are keen for we may also stop into one of the towns in the area (Sassafras?) for an early lunch between walks.

See you soon,

Dale & Clare
