Requirements: Beginners encouraged but a general level of fitness is required as the trip will involve walking on undulating terrain with a full pack. Most gear can be hired from the club but you must have hiking boots or other suitable footwear (discuss with leaders) and a head torch. A complete gear list will be made available closer to the trip.

The Fainters (Mt Fainter North & Mt Fainter South) are in the Alpine National Park and offer great views of the surrounding peaks. This trip is ideal for beginners looking to move from day trips to overnight walks.

The Plan

Leave from the clubrooms after work on Friday. Car pooling will be organized at the trip meeting. The drive will take about 6 hours – including a stop somewhere on the way for dinner.

After parking at Pretty Valley Pondage we’ll walk 4km to the Tawonga Huts. This will be night walking so head torches are essential. We’ll then sleep in the Huts or set up tents.

In the morning there will be an optional walk to the Jaithmathangs (formerly know as … something else) without packs for those who don’t need a sleep in after the night walk.

Later we’ll put out packs back on and walk about 6km to camp just below the summit of Mt Fainter South. There are no facilities where we will be camping. After setting up camp there will be opportunity to visit both the Southern and Northern summits.

On the Sunday we will walk back out to the cars after breakfast and then make the drive back to Melbourne.
