Ummmm, lyrebirds?
Lyrebirds are the singers in the forest, known for their long, beautiful songs and ability to mimic almost any sound. We often hear them when on day trips in the forests around Melbourne, and we often see the scratched spots where they forage. Sometimes, we see them. But not very often. And it's worth it - they are beautiful birds, particularly the males (so it is in the bird kingdom...).

So, up for a last minute conservation trip?

Parks Victoria are undertaking a lyrebird survey at Kinglake National Park this weekend. There are still spots available, but the ranger is not able to help with car pooling, so if you've got a car and no plans for the weekend yet, this is the trip for you!

What is involved:
Saturday: briefing/induction in Kinglake - starts at 2:30 pm
camping overnight in Kinglake (bring a tent, sleeping bag, mat & everyting else you need)
Sunday: morning survey - finishing well before lunch

This will leave plenty of time to do some more exploring around Kinglake - a day walk, or a visit to a local market or winery, or whatever you wish.
Make sure to take plenty of warm clothing.

Registration must be done by Wednesday, July 9 (that's tomorrow) by calling Ranger Tony Fitzgerald on 5786 3000.

No trip meeting as I only just found out about this survey and can't come to the clubrooms tonight. But if you're interested in participating in other lyrebird surveys in the Dandenong ranges (July 19), get in touch: conservation at mumc.org.au
