Leaders: Taner K
Standard: Everyone welcome
Meeting: Tue, 3 Mar 2015, 7:30 pm

Requirements: To form a team is the only real requirement. It can be walked, and you may return early if needed. You can try learn how to use a map and compass while doing the event, but the go-to rogaining book "which way's north" is recommended reading if you are new to bush navigation.

What is rogaining?

An event originally invented by MUMC, where pairs or teams hunt for markers placed in the bush. Teams go together and get to as many markers as they can, and return before a set finishing time. Points are given for each marker found, with more points given to markers that are further away from the start point or pose a navigational or terrain related difficulty to get to. These events are organised by the Victorian Rogaining Association, and often see a number of teams from MUMC participating. Top finishers of several categories all receive delicious prizes to make up for effectively doing an easter egg hunt without easter eggs!

About this rogaine:

It is on Sunday, 15 March 2015. Register by Wed 4 March to avoid a $10 late fee. This rogaine will have teams set off around Gardiners Creek, close to Melbourne CBD, with the option of entering the event on foot or by bicycle. Another peculiarity of this rogaine is that each marker will have a question for you to answer in order for that marker to count towards your points tally.

Ask around at club meetings (there will be a trip meeting on the Tuesday 3rd of March meeting) and form a team with people ideally at a similar fitness level. I'm not sure if I'll be attending yet, as it depends on when intro trip is, but can help people out with finding a team or answering questions.

Entry cost: $30, which includes a feast at the end of the event (bring a bowl, mug and cutlery)

More information, online entry and more at the VRA website:

What to bring on the day:

Compass and whistle, which may be rented from the club. It is also recommended you bring a small backpack with water, a pencil/pen and a highlighter to mark your map and scoresheets, some energy food, at least one first aid kit between your team, something to tell the time with, a headlamp/torch, and as deemed necessary: cold/wet weather clothing, sun protection, spare batteries/bulbs. Suitable clothing is comfortable walking/running attire, possibly long sleeves preferable, gaitors are often recommended.
