Founded in 1944 the Melbourne University Mountaineering Club (MUMC) was one of the first outdoor adventure clubs in Australia. Particularly in the early decades MUMC members were pioneers many areas of adventure recreation in Australia. Bushwalkers mapped unexplored areas, rock climbers discovered new climbing areas and put up new routes, and thousands of students were introduced to new outdoor adventures.

While much has changed, just as much has stayed the same in the club's history. The club has long been a place where students and alumni have come together for adventure and fun times in a welcoming community.

We will be running an information session on Tuesday 1st of March at our clubrooms (169-171 Berkeley Street). This is a great opportunity to ask questions of current members and look around our clubrooms and see what we can offer including

  1.  The Library (Including guidebooks to many areas across Australia and even abroard)
  2. Our Indoor Bouldering Wall and climbing training equipment.
  3. Try out the caving problem for those who aren't afraid of a squeeze.
  4. Check out our gear rooms and the equipment we have (All of which is available to hire for members)

This session will be taking place before our weekly Tuesday meeting which is always a great opportunity to meet other club members, hear the latest news, and then join us for dinner at the pub to discuss past trips and think up future adventures.

Looking for more ways to get engaged with the club? (Links in the headers)

We offer much more than just Mountaineering, with a wide range of activities from Rogaining to Whitewater Kayaking and Rock Climbing.

The Mountaineer

If you want to learn more about what the club does we have a Magazine that is published yearly with articles written by members about all things relating to MUMC.

Intro Trip

Our biggest trip of the year and perfect for new members. A weekend trip where you can try many of the activities that we offer and meet other club members and begin formulating your plans for setting off on your next adventure.

Pie and Slide

Our annual photo contest is open to all members with a variety of categories for submission and with prizes on offer. This is a great opportunity to meet current club members and find out about what they get up to.

Monday Night Climbing

This is a great way to get involved with climbing in the club regardless if you are just beginning or if you're an experienced climber looking to find some other keen individuals to train and send with.

Intro to Kayaking

A requirement for many of our kayaking trips, this session will teach you to 'wet-exit', the essential safety skill of getting out of a kayak that has flipped along with the basics of different paddle strokes.

Canoe Polo

With a somewhat misleading name, canoe polo is actually very similar to water polo except it is played in kayaks with fast-moving matches full of rapid ball handling incredibly fast turns and the occasional eskimo roll. (Contact  for training session info)

Rogaining

Keen to put your navigation skills to the test in an endurance competition that can last up to 24hrs? Rogaining gives teams of 2 to 5 a map with checkpoints of varying distances and point values. You must then plan your route, attempting to navigate to as many as possible within a specified time limit.

Social Thursdays

If you're looking for something more relaxed we regularly run a social night at our clubrooms on Thursdays. Come along for some socialising with other club members over food and boardgames or test your skills on the bouldering wall.

Keep an eye on this page as we add more trips or sign up as a member on the site and receive email notifications whenever a new trip gets posted to be the first on the list.
